Reflections
Is it right to ask for signs from God?
In the last chapters of John, we see Jesus revealing Himself to His disciples after His crucifixion. Their beloved teacher, Master was brutally tortured and hung on a tree in public to die. Jesus’ promises about the kingdom of God may have echoed in their minds as they desperately wanted to believe in the midst of this tragedy.
In their despair and pain, Jesus met them where they were and gave them signs as He had all along (John 20:30-31). He sent Mary to tell them He was alive (John 20:17-18). Then He appeared to them and showed them His hands and His side (John 20:20). And to Thomas, the doubter, He gave the sign that was asked for (John 20:25, 27). What grace and mercy! What comfort!
God is loving, gentle, and faithful. He proved His love to us through Jesus. He also knows our hearts. In our darkest moments of brokenness, when He seems so far away, He will show Himself to us if we seek Him. Ask Him. When our spiritual lives become complacent and our hearts long for more of Jesus, He will show Himself to us and restore our souls. Ask Him. And wait in expectation, in prayer, in the meditation of the Scriptures, in worship, and in fellowship with His people.
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
